Finding myself where I am right now (aka self-care is hard)

I deleted all the Crossfit people and bloggers that I used to follow on Twitter today. It was tough. I think unfollowing Elizabeth Akinwale was the hardest (you're still a goddess Elizabeth!!).  Some of you, my loyal readers, may wonder why I did this. Isn't this a Crossfit blog? Even though I've been focused on other things, and prone to disappearances for long periods of time, isn't this still a blog about getting back to Crossfit? It was. But at the moment it isn't. And I don't know what the future will bring. Because at the moment, I'm just working on

I promise, I’m still alive!!

If there is anyone still out there, I'm just dropping a quick line to let you know that I'm still alive. It has been a hard road back from burnout. For awhile, I really thought I had it licked and was almost back to normal....so of course, I returned to my overworking, junk-food eating, non-mindful self. The consequences of this are pretty messy. Lots of tiredness, food cravings, a lack of motivation and zero energy to give to extracurriculars, let alone Crossfit. Not only did I not do the Open, but I forgot it was happening. A post on Facebook today

Travel Blog: CiC goes to Playa del Carmen, Mexico

First off, I just want to clarify that Thrusters in Spanish is still Thrusters and they still suck. Whoever invented Thrusters should be beaten over the head with their own leg.  Also, if you are friends with people that make you do said Thrusters while on holiday, you may need to reconsider this friendship. Like Facebook block reconsider. But I digress. To bid adieu to 2016 (seriously, would this year end already?!?) G and I joined our friends Torben and Montse (who will now be referred to as Lady M on CiC) on their annual holiday to Playa del Carmen Mexico.

Lesson 1 in bouncing back from burnout: Workout in a way that works for you

Lesson 1: Find a way to work your workouts in - in a way that works for you. Don't be worried if this looks a lot different than the way you used to do it.  Obviously I am not going to be setting any PRs for number of blog posts this year. Which is not to say that things haven't been going well this year - they have. There just hasn't been much time or energy for blogging. As I mentioned in my last post, after burning out in spectacular fashion last year, my goal this year has been all

To Burnout and back….slowly

Hopefully some of you are still around to read the blog, I know, it's been awhile. So let's talk about where I've been. 2015 was supposed to be my year. I had just gotten married (awesome!), just started a new job with a serious promotion (also awesome!), I had it made - I was now officially living the dream. So everything should have been perfect, right? Everything.was.not.perfect. And as it turns out, I also was not perfect. This is a bit of a story about the unrealistic expectations we can put on ourselves - and consequently let others put on us. And what happens

Finding the Crossfit love again at Crossfit North Seattle

Usually I rely on my globetrotting gym-mates to provide me with their stories of visits to far off Crossfit boxes, but today it’s my turn. While visiting G’s family for Christmas in Seattle, USA  we dropped in (and dropped in, and dropped in again….) at Crossfit Seattle North. It was a somewhat cold and rainy day(which, let me tell you, really isn’t that unusual in Seattle..but hey, it isn’t snow right?  but I digress…) when G and I decided that there was only so many video games

The Effects of Jet Lag on Crossfit training (and how to reduce them)

Hello again! I started writing this post at 5:00 a.m. Why you ask? Jet lag my friend, jet lag. As you know, (since you have religiously read everything on my blog) I am an Expat. I live in Switzerland, which is far away from my homeland, and my husband’s homeland. While being an expat has many advantages, it does come with a few disadvantages…like the annual trip to see the in-laws in Seattle at Christmas. Now don’t get me wrong, I love my in-laws – I was

2015: The year I lift the sh*t out of everything!

Well it’s a New Year.  I think for the past 20 years of my life, this day has always consisted of a resolution that this year I will go on a diet and lose some weight. Inevitably that fails and it begins a cycle of dieting, breaking diet, beating myself up over not sticking to said diet, promising to do better, dieting again, breaking diet, feeling bad…. wash, rinse, repeat. Well this year…

F*ck.that.noise.

That’s right. This year, my resolution isn’t to lose weight. In

Guest Blog: Allison visits Middle Kingdom Fitness in Beijing, China!

Thanks to our travelling correspondents here at CIC, I really get to feel like I’ve crossfitted all over the world!! Today’s guest blog is from Allison, who recently visits Middle Kingdom Fitness in Beijing.  Honestly, how cool is that?!?
In Beijing in 2014, a visitor who wants to do CrossFit has two options:
  • Follow the WOD posted by your home box in the hotel gym which has limited barbell equipment (it was workable … but only just, and it was really distracting to be able to see myself in the

I ain’t as good as I once was…..

But I’m as good once as I ever was! After a few weeks of crazy work mayhem, my return to Crossfit can be summed up fairly well in these lyrics from Toby Keith’s song “I ain’t as good as I once was”.

I ain’t as good as I once was Thats just the cold hard truth I still throw a few back, talk a little smack When I’m feelin bullet proof So don’t double dog dare me now ‘Cause I’d have to call your bluff
