Crossfit Open 14.1: How I did vs How I thought I would do

So I finally did it! I finally competed and finished my first Crossfit Open WOD.

Last year, I didn’t feel ready to do the Open. This year, I still don’t feel really. The difference is that I’m doing it anyway!

I had to do the WOD on Friday since I was going to be travelling all weekend and wouldn’t be near a box before the deadline.  This meant I didn’t have a lot of time to practice…but it also meant I didn’t have a lot of time to worry either.

Because I live in Switzerland, the WOD gets announced at 2 a.m. here.  Like many other people at my gym, I set my alarm for 1:55 a.m. and woke up to watch the announcement of the WOD.  I’ll be honest with you, Crossfit people are a bit intense to watch at 2 a.m. It took some adjustment.

I was dreading that 14.1 would contain any one of my nemeses (pull-ups, burpees, wall balls…you know, the usual suspects).  I was actually pretty happy when they announced that 14.1 was going to be a repeat of a workout from the 2011 Crossfit Open.

14.1

10 MIN AMRAP
30 Double Unders
15 Snatches (or floor to overhead) 55 LBs (25kg)

This is probably as good as the WODs are going to get for me this Open.  Both of these movements fall into my “I don’t completely suck at these” class of movements.  They would be graded slightly higher except double unders are a fickle, fickle beast and sometimes leave you just desperately trying to string together 2 in a row – even though you did 30 in a row the day before.

I was pretty happy because I knew that I could at least do these movements and would be able to post  a score.  I sat down on Friday morning and outlined how I thought I would do on the WOD.  I’ve compared it to how I actually did.

It was really fun to be doing the workout and hearing your gym mates cheer you on when you think you are going to cough up a lung and disgrace yourself completely.  So far, I think it is absolutely worth it to do the Open as it really challenges you to give 100%.

Let’s see what 14.2 brings…… Any guesses anyone?

    Great score Rae! I love your chart!

    I’m with you on the, “this is probably as good as it gets for me this year” for the Open. With my being so new, plus just having had surgery and missing 3 weeks of Crossfit, my Open experience is going to be much different than I originally expected.

    I don’t know what to expect for 14.2, but all I can say (and I will say this every week for the next 4 weeks), is that I hope it at least STARTS with a movement I can do! 🙂

    I can’t wait to watch Camille vs. Talayna!

    CONGRATS! So funny that you set your alarm to watch the announcement…I would have done the same thing. My Thursday nights are carefully planned out for the next 4 weeks…haha.

    I would totally do the same thing if the WOD was announced at 2:00am! How nerveracking! 😉
