Crossfit Open 14.3: How I did vs How I thought I would do

I confess, I’ve been a terrible blogger recently. I thought that I would post every day during the Crossfit Open period, but it turns out that real life goes on even during the Open and I just haven’t felt much like blogging.  That doesn’t mean that I’m not loving my first Crossfit Open, I am! It is the ultimate in bad*ss experiences.  So far I’ve enjoyed all the WODs…which pretty much guarantees that 14.4 is going to be a burpee, thruster, toes to bar medley.  It’s coming people, I don’t know when, but at some point there is just going to be sh*t ton of burpees.  Brace yourselves.

Anyway, I was tickled pink (?!?) when they announced 14.3. Deadlifts?? Increasing weight?? Bring it on.

Great movie. You know it!

I chose to ignore that it was paired with box jumps which I hate. I just decided to look forward to lifting a ton of weight, over and over.

14.3 went down about how I expected..and I enjoyed every minute of it. Here’s a breakdown of how I did vs how I thought I would do on Crossfit Open workout 14.3.

What about you, how did you do?

How I think I will do How I did
Workout 8 minute AMRAP:
10 deadlifts, 135 / 95 lb.
15 box jumps, 24 / 20 inch
15 deadlifts, 185 / 135 lb.
15 box jumps, 24 / 20 inch
20 deadlifts, 225 / 155 lb.
15 box jumps, 24 / 20 inch
25 deadlifts, 275 / 185 lb.
15 box jumps, 24 / 20 inch
30 deadlifts, 315 / 205 lb.
15 box jumps, 24 / 20 inch
35 deadlifts, 365 / 225 lb.
15 box jumps, 24 / 20 inch
Projected Score 95 Actual Score 97 (7 deadlifts into the 4th round)
Plan My plan is to step ups rather than box jumps and to do all sets of step ups unbroken. For the deadlifts, my plan is to do the first set unbroken, the second set in 8 and 7 with a 3 sec pause, 3rd set in sets of 5 with a 3 sec pause and fourth set in sets of 2-3 with a 5 sec pauseI also asked the judge to call me on technique. We agreed that if I had to be called on technique twice that I would stop the WOD as it could be dangerous for my back. What I actually did: I did do steps ups and unbroken. Where I differed from my plan was on the 3rd set of deadlifts, I did these in sets of 3 rather than 5. I kept the 3 sec break though. For the 4th round I did single reps and didn’t pause much between them .My technique stayed fairly steady during the whole WOD. The judge warned me once about rounding my back.
Where I think I will struggle Will definitely struggle with the step ups as these tire me out quite quickly and will fatigue my legs. Where I struggled Differently on the step ups. These winded me almost immediately. The weight also became heavy quite quickly. I started feeling it in the second set already. Even 185lb is a completely manageable weight for me, I was really tired by the 4th round and had to do singles. Each one was a struggle to get to full extension.
Am I satisfied with my score: Definitely!
What helped: Having a plan. Having the judge count my pause time. Knowing that the judge would call my technique so I wasn’t worried about hurting my back.
What would I change: I would improve my step ups and do step ups, jump down. Several people in our gym did that and it was much quicker.
