I ain’t as good as I once was…..

But I’m as good once as I ever was!

After a few weeks of crazy work mayhem, my return to Crossfit can be summed up fairly well in these lyrics from Toby Keith’s song “I ain’t as good as I once was”.

I ain’t as good as I once was
Thats just the cold hard truth
I still throw a few back, talk a little smack
When I’m feelin bullet proof
So don’t double dog dare me now

Yup, country music – don’t judge me. You know you love it.

What this means is that there has been a few moments where I started to feel like the Crossfitter that I used to be.  Now, as you all know, I’ve never been a great crossfitter, that’s not the point. The point is, is that there was a period of time when I was someone who just really.loved.crossfit.  This year, I was mostly someone who wonders why they still do crossfit.  My progress was slipping, my gym buddies were gone and I still don’t have my m*therfracking pull-up.

Then I was forced to take a break.

Work-Life-Crossfit balance was not possible, something had to give – and since I like to eat and I love my husband – work and life got priority and Crossfit got put on hold for a few weeks.

Now I’m back in the gym. I always dread returning to the gym after a few weeks off because usually it is a combination of finding out how much strength you’ve lost on your lifts and wanted to vomit up a lung while doing burpees.

This time has been different. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I still want to barf up a body part while doing burpees – but to be honest, I have never NOT wanted to die during burpees so this isn’t that much of a switch.  And my lift strength has stayed pretty much constant (Yay!). But what is different is the moments of fun. I was halfway through wheezing my way through a metcon when I realized that – not only was I having fun, I was pushing myself.  And I felt like my old crossfitting self.

However. One must always pay the Crossfit piper. You take time off, you are going to pay for it.  So I’m hobbling up the stairs ater the squats and I can’t lift my arms over my head from the push presses and my abs are killing me from the toes to bar.

Yup – it’s just like the good old days!

    Boo to country music! (sorry) But glad you are back in and at it with CrossFit. Sounds like you didn’t miss too much. I get the pain going up stairs and lifting my arms even without any breaks!

    Now just keep that feeling of fun and you’ll fall in love with CrossFit all over again and before you know it you will be back to hitting PRs!
