Today is the beginning of the Crossfit Open…how do I feel?

I have to confess that I wasn’t feeling as enthused or optimistic about the Crossfit Open recently due to, what I perceived as, a lack of progress.  To be honest, I wasn’t really looking forward to it at all. Then this happened…..

I GOT MY FIRST KIPPING PULL-UP!!!

It kinda happened out of the blue but the week had definitely been looking up. I had just been starting to feel like I’d gotten a bit

Guest Blog: Miranda finds a new gym

Like I’ve said before, my crossfit gym is a bit like a family – a place “where everybody knows your name“. Those of us who have been there a while have become quite close, so it is always sad when someone leaves the gym – which happens pretty frequently because Geneva is a transient city, full of expats who often have to move as we move forward with our careers. I asked my friend, Miranda, who recently

The other fabulous things that Crossfit gives me

It’s been a while since my last post and I’m going to be brutally honest – I’m fed the f*ck up with Crossfit at the moment.  It’s been tough going recently and, even though we have moved to a bigger and better gym, I just can’t seem to pull my sh*t together.  My pull-ups have been terrible, I haven’t PR’ed in about 10 years and all my gym buddies are working out at different times now (or have left town – you know who you are!!). I’ve still been going, but

Staying focused for the Crossfit Open

With only 22 days left before the Open, I have two equally strong and opposite thoughts running through my head: 1) I need to do MORE – go more often, stay longer, work harder and 2) I can stop trying – with the Open so close, am I really going to make any progress towards my distant goals? Every morning when I get up and every night when I go to bed I have this discussion with myself (yes, I am obsessed with Crossfit and yes, I talk

Week 9 Pull up Program – No, I haven’t quit!

Just a quick update on the pull-up program. Just finished week 9, first week with just one purple band. Are these ever hard!! At the moment, getting a chance to do the pull-up practice is a bit difficult. For one, I’m doing the competitors program at our gym, which is a specially designed program for those of us who are doing the open. In a nutshell, just imagine 6 weeks of doing all the moves you are bad at..that’s the program. Honestly, who

Send your Love/Hate mail to Fran

I did Fran two days ago. I still want to die.  I can’t lift my arms over my head and had to ask for help getting dressed. I hate Fran. I love Fran. I can’t be the only person who feels this way. So I’ve set up an email address where people can send their love/hate mail to Fran.  Funny or moving excerpts will be posted on a new occasional segment I will be doing on the blog called “What People are saying about Fran….”. So if you have

Giveaway: Free entry to a 2014 Reebok Spartan Race!!!

Do you have what it takes to be a Spartan? I’d become a full blown Spartan if it meant I got to climb ropes with Gerard Butler.  You would too. Don’t lie. The man is fit. All  unrealistic dreams about meeting yummy movie stars aside, I’m super excited to be able to give one lucky reader a free entry into a 2014 Spartan Race. Upcoming races include the Arizona Spartan Sprint on Feb 8th and 9th, 2014 and the Nevada Spartan Super on April 5th, 2014. If you

How do I get back my groove back?

I am going through a pretty happy phase at the moment.  I’m in a good, happy mood. As someone who is often  moody being in a pretty consistent good mood is a bit of a oddity.  Last  year was kind of a tough year and a long running good mood happened about as much as unicorn sightings.  2014 has started differently.  Which has been great – except for one thing – I seem to have left my motivation/drive in my 2013 pants. It seemed like last year I was

The Crossfit Open is upon us – and I’ve registered!!

When I first started blogging about my journey to the Crossfit Open there were 295 days left until the Open.  Now there are 42.  Registration opened yesterday. I’m so excited to participate in the Open this year, even though I still haven’t reached a level of skill at Crossfit where I will do really well.  This doesn’t matter to me for this year – this year, it is all about getting to be a part of the global Crossfit community. To join thousands upon
