Today is the beginning of the Crossfit Open…how do I feel?

I have to confess that I wasn’t feeling as enthused or optimistic about the Crossfit Open recently due to, what I perceived as, a lack of progress.  To be honest, I wasn’t really looking forward to it at all.

Then this happened…..

It kinda happened out of the blue but the week had definitely been looking up. I had just been starting to feel like I’d gotten a bit of my Crossfit mojo back. It started with a good back squat session with Amanda “The Destroyer” and Nicole “The Rage” (yeah, we gave ourselves nicknames…don’t judge…)where I hit a PR and then continued to a few PRs throughout the week. I hadn’t PRed anything in so long that I had forgotten what it felt like.

Then in class, Coach Sophie (who might actually be a superhero) gave some absolutely awesome tips on the kipping pull-up.  She got us to focus on exaggerating the lifting of the knees on the front swing and then the kick backwards.  For some reason, this made it so that I was finally able to get the timing just right…and on one of my practice kips, I got my chin over the bar!! It was completely unexpected as I wasn’t even really aiming for that, I was just practicing the move.

I only got the one..after that my arms were too tired to pull my (yes, somewhat generous *ss) up anymore.  But while it is only one, it did make me a bit more excited about the Open. Not because I think I am magically going to be able to kipping pull-ups like Camille Leblanc-Bassinet (she does butterfly anyway – sigh, I hate her – yes I love her…such a confusing relationship….but I digress) but because I hit a milestone right before the Open and I’d been feeling a bit more of the Crossfit love.

I’m still convinced that the metcons are all going to be a combination of burpees, wallballs and pull-ups, but I’m just going to go out there, do my best…and hope for a second pull-up.

Best of luck to everyone who is participating!

I got 5 more single Kipling pull-ups today. Finally all the extra hours in the gym are starting to pay off. The program I’ve been doing for the last few months really helped move my progress forward. If you are interested I can send you the spreadsheet if you want to try it for yourself. Just let me know.
